How it works

Four steps, and you can stop after any of them.

  1. 1

    Tell us about you

Answer the same questions the banks ask. It saves as you go.

  2. 2

    Send your documents

Your ID, payslips and bank statements. Send them now or later.

  3. 3

    We approach the banks

Your agent checks it with you, then BetterBond puts it to the banks.

  4. 4

    Go in with a number

See what each bank may lend you, and make your offer knowing your budget.

What you will need

Have these to hand, or add them later with your private link.

  • Your IDFront and back, if it is a smart card.
  • Proof of incomeYour last 3 payslips. Self-employed: a letter from your accountant confirming your personal monthly income.
  • 3 months of bank statementsFrom the account your income is paid into.
  • The same for a co-applicantIf you are applying with a spouse or partner.

What a bank looks at

The number that matters most is your repayment against your income.

  • Affordability. The new repayment plus what you already repay should stay near 30% of your gross monthly income. Some banks stretch to about 35%.
  • Your credit record. A bank checks it, with your consent.
  • Steady income. How long you have been with your employer or in your business.
  • Your deposit. Not always needed, but a bigger one lowers the repayment and helps your case.

First home? The government may add to your deposit.

First Home Finance, run by the National Housing Finance Corporation, is a subsidy for first-time buyers. It lowers the loan you need. We check it for you as you fill in the application, and add what it needs to your documents.

  • Household income of R 3 501 to R 22 000 a month
  • South African citizen or permanent resident, 18 or older
  • Never owned a home, never had a housing subsidy
  • Single with dependants, married, or living with a partner
  • A bank approves your home loan in principle

Good to know

Does it cost anything?

No. Finding out what a bank may lend you is free and does not commit you to anything.

Is this an approval?

No. It shows what the banks should be willing to lend, based on what you tell us. Each bank makes its own decision after it has checked your documents and credit record.

Will it affect my credit record?

With your consent, a bank or BetterBond checks your credit record, and that is noted as an enquiry. A few enquiries close together are normal when you apply for a home loan.

Can I apply with my spouse or partner?

Yes. Add them as a co-applicant. Their income counts towards what a bank will lend, and they send their own ID, payslips and bank statements.

I do not have all my documents yet.

Start anyway. Everything saves, and you can add documents later with your private link. Your agent can see what is still missing.

Who sees my information?

Your agent, BetterBond and the banks you ask them to approach. Your application is on a private link that only you have.
