Transfer duty explained, band by band
Transfer duty is a tax the buyer pays to SARS when a property changes hands. It is charged in bands, so only the part of the price above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
Up to R1 210 000 there is no duty. Above that, 3% applies to the value over R1 210 000 up to R1 663 800. From R1 663 801 to R2 329 300 the duty is R13 614 plus 6% of the value above R1 663 800.
From R2 329 301 to R2 994 800 it is R53 544 plus 8% of the value above R2 329 300. From R2 994 801 to R13 310 000 it is R106 784 plus 11% of the value above R2 994 800. Above R13 310 000 it is R1 241 456 plus 13% of the value above R13 310 000.
If the seller is a VAT vendor selling as part of their business, VAT may be charged instead of transfer duty. The transferring attorney confirms which applies to your purchase.
